“It’s a godsend to have a senior leader like that to step up and take control,” said Eastern Michigan men’s basketball coach Charles Ramsey about senior guard Carlos Medlock. “He did a great job with the two-man game, he did a great job at the free throw line, he did a great job just finishing. Everyone doesn’t get that luxury.”
EMU enjoyed that luxury Saturday at the Convocation Center when the Eagles pulled out a cross-divisional victory against the Mid-American Conference East Division’s Ohio University.
The Eagles, who improve to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in the MAC, beat the Bobcats 71-60 with Medlock scoring 31 points.
Medlock had plenty of help from fellow starters Brandon Bowdry and Justin Dobbins, who each put up double-doubles. Bowdry, with his 19th career double-double had 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Dobbins added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“We stayed with it. Brandon came back big,” said Ramsey. “Our big three are doing it for us.
“Our biggest thing is February. February has been very good to us around here and we have gotten stronger as the season’s progressed and that’s what we can hopefully continue to do.”
Ohio was led by Armon Bassett with 19 points and freshman point guard D.J. Cooper with 15 points.
“D.J. Cooper is going to be very good,” said Ramsey. “He reminds me of Carlos as a freshman in a lot of ways, so I think he is going to be a very good player.”
With the loss, Ohio drops to 12-11 (3-6 MAC) and falls to sixth in the MAC East Division.
“We’re playing catch-up. We gave one away and we got beat one at home, and you hate to lose at home,” said Ramsey. “Somehow we have to go out and find how to make those two up. “If we can get a couple on the road, that will put us back where we need to be.”
The Eagles get a four-day break then will be on the road this Wednesday to take on Buffalo at Alumni Arena.http://www.emyouthemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/PakmodeWebLogo.png
