Poetry

My dear readers, I have decided to share, in the first section of this magazine some of my own poetry as well. Here is one of them it is called

Quickened Hope

Another box of memories,
broken hearts and lying eyes
I can’t count the nights I’ve cried,
A burned up box of memories
and a thousand shattered dreams
I keep wishing and hoping for better days

Dear those who’ve ever been terrified
lost,dazed and confused
I’m here to say I’ve been there with you
I seek that One genuine soul that Loves me
That one that Loves me true, that one I can Love too

Will she find me in my sanity or in my eccentricities
I hope in both, she will embrace all of me
I would not shun, the truth is we all have abundant flaws
But Love reaches beyond those

I think back on many years of bitter memories
I want that one that can help me break those chains
and burn away the tragedies and pain

Someone to love me for me

Thank you all for checking out the first section of this publication,be sure to return for section two.it will definitely be worthwhile. Given that this is the first issue, it will contain mostly my own art and poems, later though I would welcome more contributors.

Any and All welcome, note however that I will review all submissions before publication. Contributors of course will keep the rights to all their work. This publication is simply to help those that seek to have their work exposed to a mass audience.

This is the moment that everyone has been waiting for. There are finally leaked Halo reach pictures! From a very reliable source, I have a confirmation that these are real leaked shots of Halo Reach being played at the Microsoft Headquarters. They are obviously still working on the beta pre-release stages but it seems to be coming along extremely well.

Here we have the main menu screen. Halo graphics in the background and simple menu buttons as always from Bungie. Nothing awesome, but its better to keep this part simple.

Not so sure what this gun is. Looks sort of like a out of control carbine with a needler welded on the front? Maybe its an add on to a needler? The warthog definitely looks detailed and awesome. Obviously Bungies has yet to spend much time on the environment. The textures of that rock in the background are of horrible quality. But hey, that gun looks sick!

Some mid-space battleing going on with what looks like an updated spartan lazer with a little flip out LCD screen. strange.. Maybe it’s just a huge HD camcorder >.<

The environment in this photo looks very detailed and nearly finished, sweet! The needler has a much needed makover as well. =]

Another much needed makeover on the battle rifle. very nice.

Looks like the famous rocker launcher updated! All of the crosshairs are looking a bit different as well. The charcter in this shot also looks very detailed and interesting.

Kind of pointless shot, but shows off the battle rifle a bit more, and is it just me or does the hand look different?

Can’t wait for the Halo Reach Mulitplayer beta to be released to the public around March 2010!

Warnings Unheeded, Disasters Incurred – Warnings From Omni Magazine, 1989

June 22nd, 2011

Omni is a defunct monthly magazine whose writing style and articles were a combination of scientific fact, technology and science fiction. It was in print from 1978 until 1995. An article from its January, 1989 issue was entitled, “Near Future Potential For Massive Terrorism on U.S. Soil” and was written by G. Gordon Liddy, a character infamous for his Watergate shenanigans. The article is written as a fictional memo to the President of the United States, summarizing the cause and impact of a multifaceted terror campaign on U.S. soil.

Given that the article was written about twelve years before the 9-11 attacks, it is interesting to see how Liddy saw the future unfolding. While he vastly overestimated the impact that the Soviet Union and South American influences would have in a terror filled future, he was pretty accurate in many respects:

– “As it is, we have had to ground the U.S. civil commercial aviation fleet for an indefinite time.” Just as Bin Laden saw it, the country’s aviation system could be used not only to kill Americans but also be used to disrupt the economy. Although it did not last as long as Liddy predicts, the entire U.S. aviation system was grounded for several days after the 9-11 attacks, inflicting further economic damage on the country beyond the actual attacks themselves.

– “Unfortunately, all major north-south railroad traffic in the United States funnels through two choke points: a single strategic railroad bridge over the Potomac River between Washington D.C. and Virginia and the rail complex at Cincinnati. On the night of August 2nd, terrorist-planted pressure mines took out the Potomac Bridge and the Cincinnati choke point was severed by the use of an expert combination of low order and high order explosives.” Given some of the early information being learned form the computers and data taken in the Bin Laden raid, it is clear the Bin Laden also had the same thoughts as Liddy as far as terror attacks on the nation’s rail systems.

– “While there are different estimates of the number of international terrorist groups, here we are including the PLO, the IRA, the Japanese Red Army, and French Action Directe, and Islamic Jihad.”  Although 9-11 was still twelve years away, Liddy did correctly identify a type of Islamic jihad that carried out the attacks on 9-11.

– “The entire Louisiana attacking force (of terrorists) was recruited citizens of Communist African nations…and that groups of blacks could pass unnoticed in Louisiana. This led to the white commanding officers ignoring the input of competent black police in the South, who detected the presence  of black aliens immediately and submitted their field intelligence reports on this matter…but when they reported them to their white superiors  they were either ridiculed or ignored.”

Much like 9-11, in Liddy’s view, FBI field law enforcement officers correctly recognized various threats and reported their findings and theories which were ignored by their superiors. The Phoenix FBI office, among other offices, reported numerous accounts of suspicious activity by people that eventually ended up hijacking the planes on 9-11, accounts that were never acted on by their superiors.

– “The how is relatively simple. The terrorists were outfitted with appropriate clothing, alias documentation, and pocket money and infiltrated into the nation with the most porous border on earth.” Looks like our border security was just as bad back in 1989 as it is now.

– “Even without resorting to such high tech weapons, it is relatively straightforward to get a standard-construction gun through the airport magnetometers and roentgen machines, which are a joke.” Given that the 9-11 terrorists also used low tech weaponry (box cutters) and easily got them through airport security, it appears that Liddy foresaw this possibility also.

– “The people expect their government to do something about it: to fix the problem and punish those responsible. And the American people are not patient. Their faith in what the Founding Fathers wrought is ebbing fast.” Sounds like this applies today, not only to terror attacks but to the overall incompetency of government and the political class to fix any problem, not just terrorism. Another good prediction from Liddy.

– “Gradually, over the past few administrations, as Congress passed law after law for the people and the executive branch to follow but excepted Congress itself (the civil rights acts, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the minimum wage laws, etc.) and as Congress continued to act as if the rest of the laws of the land did not apply to them…” Sound familiar, 22 years after Liddy made his prediction?

Seems like Liddy got most of the general concepts right relative to terrorism and 9-11 even if he was a little off on some of the details. He also predicts terror attacks on the country’s electrical power grid and the country’s natural gas distribution network, all of which, when combined with a grounded aviation system and a crippled rail system, results in all types of other crises including food shortages and spoilage, sanitation problems, martial law, etc.

For the most part, the political class has not made any of these other catastrophes less likely since 1989, that our power grid, transportation networks, our gas and oil pipelines , etc. are just as vulnerable today as when Liddy made these predictions.

A related side article by Peter Kornbluh also has some pretty accurate quotes and predictions:

* The enemy no longer wears a uniform, drives a tank, or man’s a battleship.
He is a terrorist who takes hostages in the Middle East and plots attacks inside the United States.

* The evolution from conventional to unconventional warfare does not mean that the world will be a safer place.

* “We can expect that CIA covert paramilitary and political operations…will continue in every country where U.S. policy makers arrogantly believe they can shape events.

* The proliferation of U.S. intervention in low-level conflicts  around the globe will not advance U.S. national interests in peace and security.

Looks like both Liddy and Kornbluh got the future right. Too bad that the political class and the government it runs did not get it right and make the proper anti-terror defensive plans, based on their insights. Maybe if they had read the article, 3,000 Americans would not have died on 9-11. Maybe we would not find our selves having fought a useless war in Iraq and are probably fighting a losing war in Afghanistan.

But should we expect anything different from these career politicians? Michael Lewis, a typical Wall Street type, foresaw the coming Great Recession, driven by bad securities from the real estate industry, and made a lot of money off of his insights besides writing a successful book describing what he foresaw. However, no one in the political class or the agencies responsible for economic oversight  (e.g. SEC, Treasury Department, Federal Reserve, Congressional committees) saw the coming economic collapse.

In 1999, Wall Street trader Harry Markopolos wrote to the SEC and stated: “Madoff Securities is the world’s largest Ponzi scheme.” However, the scheme went on for many more years and robbed many more Americans of their life savings before the political class and the government ever got around to doing what Markopolos did many years before.

The list goes on and on. There are many smart Americans in this country but it seems like their input never gets appreciated and used. Whether it is preventing terror attacks or financial crises, the political class always seems to be late, always coming up with an ineffective, expensive solution. Heck, Liddy gave them the terror blueprint for 9-11 twelve years before it happened and they still could not get it right. Lewis and Markopolos gave them the financial scandal and economic collapse blueprint years before they actually appreciated what they were being told. Liddy told them in 1989 that our borders were insecure and 22 years later they are still unsecure. The list goes on and on.

That is why we need to make substantial changes to our political processes so that we finally get people into office that can anticipate crises and problems and then have the problem solving skills to attack would-be problems before they become crises. Many steps are needed to improve and overhaul our political processes, whether it is campaign finance reform, term limits, Congressional committee accountability, primary election reforms, etc. The current way we do things politically in this country is not working. Even with ample warning, disasters still hit us constantly because of our politicians’ incompetency or complacency.

We need to get to a point where warnings are heeded and disasters are averted. Until then, we will continue to be amazed that 22 year old magazines are more accurate and timely than today’s politicians in Washington D.C.

Review of Evergreen Magazine

June 22nd, 2011

I would like to introduce you to a very pleasant magazine called ‘Evergreen’.   It is issued quarterly and is filled with a delightful collection of articles, poetry, letters, biographies and  personal  memories.  Describing itself as ‘a miscellany of this and that and things gone by’ the winter edition contains, among many other things, an article on standing stones, another about a Highland town made famous by such writers as Sir Walter Scott and Jules Verne, some personal memories of Christmas Past and another with some interesting facts about the Police Box, famously adopted by Dr Who and known as ‘the Tardis’.

‘Evergreen’ is a magazine which is unapologetically rich in nostalgia, so the reader must be of an age to recall events and celebrities of days gone by and to enjoy indulging  in a little journey back into the past.  It is also very British but with plenty of Anglophile appeal.

If you are travelling it is an ideal book to fit into a small bag, also it contains lots of short reads which make it an ideal companion in any waiting room situation.  There are jokes and snippets to make you smile even if the waiting is over long.

It is a small enough to leave on a coffee table with room to spare for a tray and biscuits and tempting enough for a visitor to find something entertaining to read  while you are preparing the coffee!

I f you like to sit quietly and relax  a while, or have a bedtime story that will end your day gently and perhaps even give you some sweet dreams then Evergreen is for you.   It costs £3.50, has 140 pages and is available from your local newsagent or by annual subscription.

Make Magazine Paper Bead Jewelry!

June 21st, 2011

Things You’ll Need:

scissors
magazines
glue
jewelry thread
seed beads (optional)
some type of clear wood sealant
hanger
thin dowel rod, toothpick, or needle

Begin by selecting the colors of magazine paper that you like. Then cut long triangular shaped strips of the paper between 6-12 inches long. The base of the triangle should be the desired length of the bead. For example, if you want your bead to be an inch long, the base should be an inch wide.

Put a couple drops of glue on the last two inches of the strip of paper towards the point of the triangle and spread it into an even layer.

Place the dowel rod, toothpick, or needle (depending on how big you want the hole in the middle of the bead to be) at the base of the long triangular strip of paper. Begin rolling the strip of paper with the rod inside. Make it as tight as possible to have a smooth bead.

At this point, you will have a bead sealed with the bit of glue. Allow the glue to dry. Continue this process until you have the desired number of beads.

After the beads have dried, you should string them all together on a piece of jewelry thread or cord. Use elastic cord if you wish the necklace to stretch. Hang the strand of beads on a hanger then spray them with a wood shelac polyurethane or other type of sealant and allow them to dry.

How to Save Money on Books, Magazines and Movies

June 21st, 2011

The current economic downturn has been difficult for everyone. Discretionary income has dipped dramatically as Americans cannot secure new credit and are being laid off in record numbers. One of the best ways to manage the stress stemming from these conditions is to escape from reality every now and then with a good book, magazine or movie. Since we have less money to spend on leisure activities, how can we afford to go to the movies, buy books from a bookstore or purchase a magazine subscription? Well the answer is quite simple, go to your local library!

If you have not visited a library in a long time you will be pleasantly surprised at how times have changed. The library not only has the same great books as the bookstore, they have a lot more to offer. And the best news of all is that it’s FREE! That’s right; your tax dollars are at work at the library. Use it!

Besides books, the library has the latest issue of the most popular magazines and newspapers. From the New York Times to Popular Mechanics, you will be able to find an interesting periodical.

Most libraries also have an extensive movie collection that you can check out just like books. They even have kid’s movies! Did you know that your library has computers you can use for free? From watching movies to using the internet for school projects or job searching, the library is there for you. The library is also a great place to meet others. Book clubs and interest groups routinely use the library to meet and discuss their views. Most libraries have book readings and guest authors from time to time. They also have children’s book readings and art classes.

The library is also usually a polling place where you can vote at election time. Some libraries are used as a place to get recycle bins so you can do your part to protect Mother Earth. And finally, most libraries have a coffee bar so you can get a coffee or tea while soaking up the atmosphere. There is something inherently exciting about being in a room so full of knowledge. Now if only you had enough time to read it all!

How to Start a Magazine

June 21st, 2011

Dreams of becoming a magazine mogul and schmoozing with the other big wigs in the publishing and entertainment world have motivated many people to start their own magazine. Writers looking for an outlet for their work, or a person with a unique hobby or interest may take this option. Often, someone spots a niche that is not covered in their geographic area and decides to address it by starting a magazine of their own.

Unfortunately, for too many, this dream quickly turns into a financial nightmare. The magazine production costs quickly outpace the advertising and subscription revenue. Writing enough quality content to fill a magazine becomes an arduous task. Couple this with securing revenue to cover the costs of production and advertising to potential subscribers, and it become an overwhelming endeavor. So, how does one go about starting a magazine and making it work?

First, it is important to research the potential topic and see what the competition is for that particular market. A local sports magazine might work in an area where there is good support and a solid following for the local sports programs, if there is not already a magazine covering that topic. Trying to bring another national sports magazine to the market would be difficult with such favorites as Sports Illustrated, Sport, ESPN Magazine and others already occupying prominent spaces. This does not mean that a new magazine with a unique slant on the market wouldn’t succeed. Begin by researching what is already available and present a new idea or a new angle on an established idea.

Next, it is important to decide at what level (local, regional, or national) you are planning to approach the market from. If a local magazine is the goal, one person may be able to handle all the tasks. Trying to handle the production, advertising, sales, and writing is too much for anyone to handle when focusing on a regional or national scale. A larger magazine will require help from others to handle all of these tasks.

Another part of this planning process must include a decision on the delivery format. A magazine may be delivered in traditional, print format or in electronic media format. The electronic format is a much less expensive format, after initial setup. The cost of the domain name and web hosting will be the major expense when setting up an e-zine. The print option will entail more cost on each issue. The cost of the paper, printing, mailing, delivering, and storing the magazines must be taken into account. The frequency of issues will increase or decrease these costs. This is why some magazine publishers opt for a quarterly production schedule.

Determining the cost of production and the potential market will help you set advertising rates. This will also set the amount of space needed for advertising, and conversely the amount of space available for articles and other content. When setting advertising rates, factors such as the number of ads in the magazine, the estimated readership, and target businesses must be taken into account.

Pre-advertising and marketing the magazine title will help to build hype and start generating advertising revenue. Putting together a sample layout for use when approaching potential advertisers will help them see what you are proposing. Using the internet can help to build advance interest, as well. Press releases and free, or cheap, advertising will also help.

Filling the magazine with quality articles and other content is essential to the success of the magazine. This content may be produced by you or by other writers, depending on size of the magazine and the market. If you produce the articles, provide the pictures and do the advertising layout you will save a lot on production. If you need to buy articles, pictures, or pay for layout or formatting, the production costs will be higher. Sometimes it is possible to get writers who will work for exposure and a byline without pay, especially if there is the potential for pay later.

Finally, the magazine must be laid out and set up for production. It is important to find a quality printer for the magazine, if you go with the print option. For the first issue, it will be important to estimate the number of magazines needed. For subsequent issues, the subscription numbers and previous sales numbers will help determine print needs. It is always important to print more than the number purchased the previous issue. If an electronic format is chosen, the layout must be attractive and easy to navigate. Once the magazine is laid out and printed, or loaded up to the website, it must be delivered and promoted. A magazine is only as successful as its circulation numbers. Advertisers want to see a good return for their investment. They want to know that their advertisement is reaching as any people as possible. Ultimately, the success of the magazine relies on the number of people who read it.
